# Hand Tools **Allen Keys** I use a set from Wiha. It is very high quality. The holder does a good job. It is a 9 or 10 piece set with a Prostar holder. [L-key set in ProStar holder](https://www.wiha.com/au/en/tools/l-keys/wiha-prostar/hexagon-socket/sets/867/l-key-set-in-prostar-holder?c=23) Looks like they have some other new features - ErgoStar Holder (Twist the largest key and all others twist out and release) - MagicRing (Holds the bolt (not magnetic)) - Short Shaft (Base of the L is shorter which makes it easier to use in space restricted areas) - Fluorescent Colour Coating Available from - Element14 - RS - Total Tools - Amazon (long wait but cheaper) **Side Cutters** I like, small cutters that are flush. I got a pair from Prime years ago and they are great. Have never been able to find them again. Going to try the Weller Erem range. The 532N which is a super full flush cutter. [Weller Erem 532N](https://au.element14.com/erem/532n/cutter-side-oval-head-120mm/dp/1326096?ost=weller+532n&cfm=true) Thoughts: This is a very nice pair of side cutters. Very sharp and precise. Nice flush cut. Spring is a good force level and the movement is very smooth. Compared to my old pair the do have some downsides. The rubber handles are very bulky (probably good on your hands) and they are significantly larger which is a pain when storing in my tool bag. Also the jaws don't open anywhere near as wide (1/2 as wide). This pair is listed as being able co cut through 1.6mm copper. Wider jaws with a thinner head would suit me better (not sure if that combination is possible from Weller Erem). Trying a [Lindstrom 8151](https://www.lindstromtools.com/int_en/precision-diagonal-cutters-with-oval-head---esd-safe-handle-pb_8130-8162_.html) as it is a good price $81 and is in stock next day delivery. The tip sets the temperature. So they aren't adjustable but they regulate the temperature at the tip and they don't overshoot. Can put a lot of energy in. We have purchased a Thermaltronics [TMT-9000S](http://www.thermaltronics.com/tmt-9000s.php) [Tips](http://www.thermaltronics.com/tipcartridge.php) [Tip Cross Reference](http://www.thermaltronics.com/mseries_ref.php) There are a range of tips that vary by size (0.4mm to 5mm+), shape and temperature ratings (Blue is coolest, Yellow is 370) Mx5CH030 x = 6 (600 Series 325°C - 358°C) x = 7 (700 Series 350°C - 398°C) x = 8 (800 Series 420°C - 475°C) JBC appear to be about the best. This one (CDE-2BQA) is $1000. It graphs the amount of energy that was put into the joint. Allows comparisons from one solder joint to the next. https://mektronics.com.au/products/jbc-cde-b-station-soldering-assistant JBC T210 is a short tip length (less than an inch) which makes it easy to use. JBC NASE-1C is a dual iron setup that looks really good. It appears to have its own range of wands/tweezers that are well regarded Metcal are popular. mx5000 Thermaltronics [TMT-2000S line](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NS4J254/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) can use the Metcal tips (available at Jaycar) Hakko FX-951 are supposed to be ok (not sure if currie or resistive) but in general people don't like the Hakko or Weller irons as their designs haven't changed much over time. ### Resistive Soldering Iron [Hakko FX-888D](https://www.hakko.com/english/products/hakko_fx888d.html) [T18 tips](https://www.hakko.com/english/products/hakko_fx888d_tips.html) T18-D32 is a good standard tip. Tips available from E14 and RS ## Hot Air Rework Quick 861DW are a popular budget choice AIXUN T3A is a cheap iron that can use more expensive tips (JBC?) >DIFFERENCE The TMT-9000S operates at 13.56 Mhz (13560 Khz) whereas the TMT-2000S operates at 470 Khz. The TMT-9000S because of the higher frequency will heat up faster and respond faster when the temperature dips. In real world applications, this would be noticeable at start-up where the tip will heat up faster on the TMT-9000S vs the TMT-2000S. Once it heats to temperature, the only other time this would be noticeable is: > 1. when soldering boards with large copper heat sinks and multi-layer boards where the extra power would be needed. > 2. very small soldering joints where you need more precision and good heat transfer >Note: as PCBA/components are getting smaller you will be seeing a lot of boards that require you to solder a very small component on to a small board that has a large heat sink attached to it. For these types of jobs where point 1 and 2 are both applicable at the same time you are better off with the TMT-9000S >TMT-9000S The TMT-9000S uses the SHP-1 hand piece and M Series tips (one hand piece, allows use of all M Series tip types below): M Series standard tips - these are in the regular line up and cover a wide range of applications from production to rework M Series Power Plus - these tips are larger in size then the regular tips and are suitable for heavy duty applications with heat sinks or where extra power is needed M Series Micro Fine - these tips are used for finer applications (<0.4mm) and are meant to deliver power and precision. >TMT-2000S All TMT-2000S configurations come with the same exact base power supply (TMT-2000PS). The difference is the hand piece being paired with the power supply. >The most widely used configurations would be ([http://www.thermaltronics.com/tmt-2000s.php 1](http://www.thermaltronics.com/tmt-2000s.php)): TMT-2000S-K (K Series, SHP-K handpiece used on the left port of the system) TMT-2000S-PM (P Series, SHP-PM handpiece used on the right port of the system) TMT-2000S-SM (S Series, SHP-SM handpiece used on the right port of the system) >There are three different tip series usable on the TMT-2000S: >1. K Series ([http://www.thermaltronics.com/k_series.php 1](http://www.thermaltronics.com/k_series.php)) - most users of this use it for production line work as it’s very cost effective, the tips have a large copper mass for stored energy. PRO - lowest priced tips, good heat transfer due to large copper mass CON - larger shaft body, if soldering in hard to reach places this may not be suitable >2. P Series ([http://www.thermaltronics.com/p_series.php 2](http://www.thermaltronics.com/p_series.php)) - can be used for production and rework, the tips are slimmer then the K Series tips. If you have soldering jobs that require finer precision tips or have access issues (small opening) this is more suitable then the K Series. PRO - thin shaft body, good for rework & production CON - higher price compared to K Series >3. S Series ([http://www.thermaltronics.com/s_series.php 1](http://www.thermaltronics.com/s_series.php)) - exactly the same as the K Series, the only difference is the connector end of the tip. It uses a two pin connector allowing backwards compatibility with old SP200 units on the market. PRO - tips are compatible with older SP200 systems on the market (good for shops with older SP200 that want to order only 1 tip series) CON - higher price compared to K Series / P Series, the two-pin connector design is not as reliable as the single pin design in the K and P Series. >So after the long explanation, how do you choose which system/series to use? >- Go with the TMT-9000S if you are looking for a high performance system that can do all soldering jobs, and has largest selection of tips. The con would be the price of the system and the price of the tips. # CNC Tools For Paromed we look after some CNC machines. We need to calibrate them regularly. We have some tools that make that easier. [Axial Preset Gauge](https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/m693) This is used for accurately setting the tool height above the workpiece bed. The outside of the block is 50.00mm +- 0.005mm. You use the metal rod that comes with it to push the plunger down so that it is level with the outer ring. Then you twist the dial so that the needle is pointing to 0. Now when it is pressed down to 50mm the dial will read 0. I don't know what they grub screw in the bottom is used for. Here is a [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Lcl00-pPtU) that shows a type of axial preset gauge that is similar to the one that we have. Here is a more detailed [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1g78kAyqbM&t=29s) that shows how to use a slightly different type of axial preset gauge (calibration technique is different). # Labelling ## Electrical Standard [Brady BMP21 Plus](https://www.bradyid.com.au/bmp21-plus-label-printer.html) Professional labeller.
